Abstract

Aim: Bromelain is a protease enzyme generated from various parts of pineapple plant. It is an amalgamation of several thiolendopeptidases, as well as phosphatases, glucosidase, and other enzymes with important pharmacological properties. The development of advanced pharmacologically active substance with minimal side effect remains the gold standard of any new drug development. This review aims to highlight the importance of the enzyme bromelain in modern drug formulations in the field of dentistry.

Material and methods: In vitro and in vivo studies on Bromelain enzyme and its application in dentistry searches were performed in PubMed and Scopus library databases since 2000 till July 2023.

Results:16 studies with full text article were included in this review. The result shows limited research with the potentiality of Bromelain enzyme in the field of dentistry.

Conclusion:In vitro and in vivo research shows that bromelain has a variety of effects namely anti-oedematous, regenerative, and anti-inflammatory propertiesamongmany others the most anticipated being its antimicrobial property which has garnered much interest due to the incessantly increasing antibiotic resistance worldwide. Bromelain has demonstrated a tremendous amount of potential, but additional clinical research is necessary to generate enough evidence-based literature for use in oral healthcare in the future.
