Abstract

Background: Haemorrhoidal disease is the one of the most common diseases encountered in the surgical OPD. The present study was conducted to compare the short term outcomes of LASER haemorrhoidoplasty procedure vs open surgical haemorrhoidectomy.

Materials & Methods: 38 cases of haemorrhoids of both genders with grades varying from II to IV were selected. Group I patients were treated with LASER haemorhoidoplasty method and group II patients were treated with open surgical haemorrhoidectomy. Parameters such as operative time, pain on VAS scale and complications was recorded.

Results: Group I had 10 males and 8 females and group II had 13 males and 7 females. The mean operative time was 18.2 minutes in group I and 25.4 minutes in group II. The difference was significant (P< 0.05). The mean VAS in group I and group II on day 1 was 4.8 and 6.4, on day 7 was 4.2 and 5.8, on day 14 was 2.3 and 5.4 and on day 21 was 1.2 and 3.5 respectively. The difference was significant (P< 0.05).

Conclusion: LASER Haemorrhoidoplasty is a better approach for patients with Grade II and III haemorrhoids in terms of less post operative pain and less operative time.
