Abstract
BACKGROUND: Venous leg ulcers (VLUs) are common chronic wounds that significantly impair quality of life due to pain, exudate, odour, disfigurement, and high recurrence (50–70%), often leading to psycho-social issues. They constitute 70–90% of chronic leg ulcers and may progress to serious complications if untreated. In India, the prevalence is about 4.5 per 1000 population annually, with a higher incidence of ulceration in males and not uncommon to females who are having a higher incidence of varicose veins. The ulcers are likely to occur in and around the ankle region. Despite modern surgery, compression therapy and wound care the healing remains challenging. There are various dressing materials mentioned by Acharya Sushruta and also emphasised Ghrita (medicated ghee) possesses Shodhana (cleansing) and Ropana (healing) properties and is indicated in Vrana (wounds). Hence, Manjistadi Ghrita Vikeshika which is having was developed as a novel, standardized, sterilized Ayurvedic medicated dressing.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Subjects suffering from venous ulcer attending the OPD and IPD of JSS Ayurveda Medical College & Hospital, were selected for this clinical study. A total number of 40 subjects were selected for the study & were randomly allotted into two groups namely Group-A and Group-B with 20 in each group. Subjects of Group- A was treated with Manjistadi Ghrita Vikeshika and subjects of Group-B were treated with Jathyadi Ghrita Vikeshika.
RESULTS: After completion of the treatment schedule, it was found that Manjistadi Ghrita Vikeshika was effective in the treating venous ulcer in terms of Burning sensation, Pain, Itching, granulation tissue formation and promotes faster wound healing. Whereas, Jathyadi ghrita Vikeshika also effective, but on overall assessment it was found that Manjistadi Ghrita Vikeshika demonstrated superior therapeutic efficacy over Jatyadi Ghrita Vikeshika in wound healing.
CONCLUSION: Manjistadi Ghrita Vikeshika is more effective than Jathyadi Ghrita Vikeshika in the management of Dusta Vrana vis-à-vis venous ulcer. Hence, alternative Hypothesis (H1) is accepted.
