Traditional Herbal Medicine in the Treatment of Diabetes

Abstract

Introduction: Many illnesses, including diabetes mellitus, are treated with ayurvedic formulas. To evaluate the quality of medicines, herbal formulations must be standardised. In this current study we examine the standardisation of five herbal anti-diabetic medications, including Salacia reticulata (Ekanayaka), Momordica charantia (bitter melon), Pterocarpus marsupium (Vijaysar), Costus igneus (Insulin Plant), and Syzygium cumini (Jamun guthali), both individually and in polyherbal marketed samples.
Objectives: The goal of this review is to study about the herbal treatment of diabetes using medicinal plants. The present review describes the herbal plant morphology, their role in treatment of diabetes and availability of herbal plants available in market.
Methods: 5 herbal plants were used to examine the role of herbal medicine in the treatment of diabetes. Different parts of these five herbal plants were use for antidiabetic herbal formulation. In this study herbal plants and their pharmacological activities (anti diabetic activity) were examined.
Results & Conclusions: The five specific herbal remedies' limits from their many physicochemical properties and their marketed formulations could serve as a benchmark for standardizing anti-diabetic medications. The findings of this review will offer the proof required to back up the use of this plant in a number of different ayurvedic scenarios.
