Abstract

Introduction: Plasma levels of Prostate Specific Antigen and whole body bone scan findings play major role in diagnosis, treatment and monitoring of patients with prostate cancer. It has been suggested that sites and number of metastases on bone scan may be correlated with elevated prostate specific antigen plasma levels.

Objectives: to compare between number and site of metastasis that appear on bone scan and the level of PSA in patients presented with prostate cancer.

Methods: a cross sectional clinical study, which was conducted on metastatic prostate patients at King Khalid Hospital, Najran, Saudi Arabia,  during period from 2019 to 2022: 81 male patients with bone metastasis, clinical and biochemical evidence and age-matched collected from medical records, Prostate Specific Antigen levels number and site of metastases, bone scan findings and Gleason Score have been analyzed, and summarized as percentages frequencies, means and standard deviations using SPSS version 23.

Results :34 patients (42 %) of the patients were aged between (65 - 74). Patients  who presented with PSA >500ng/ml were 24 (29.6%),in addition 45 patients (55.6%)of studied patients ' their number of metastases were more than 20 according to Total Body Bone Scan findings were 70 pt. (86.4%). According to distribution of metastases  67 pt. (82.7%) was on bone, 50 pt. (61.7%) on lymph nodes, while it was less than (30%)on lungs and   liver. The present study showed Gleason Score 9-10 on  proximately more than two third of patients(69.1%).

Conclusions: In the light of the study findings and answering of research questions, it was concluded that there was a strong symmetrical correlation between number of metastases and PSA at presentation of total body bone scan findings of patients ,even metastases site and Gleason Score.
